Your family cycling holidays in the Dolomites

On the road … family-friendly bike tours in Dobbiaco,
in Alta Pusteria and in the Dolomites

We know one thing for sure: exploring is twice as much fun when done on a bike saddle. And when you’re on holiday with kids, a bike trip is always a good idea. Especially when the Dolomites are right at your doorstep.

And the little ones? Well, they either pedal for themselves or watch the world go by from their little throne in the back of your bike.

On a relaxed bike trip, you don’t need any daring mountain trails or the highest peaks. These family-friendly paths lead over longer flat stretches or over slightly hilly terrain – along rivers, past lakes or through the forest. Cycling never gets boring and the route is easy for everyone to master. Along the way, there is a lot to discover and you’ll always find a nice place for a picnic.

Tips for trips during your cycling holidays in the Dolomites:

Passing by natural treasures of a unique beauty in the world like the Three Peaks of Lavaredo, waters of an intense blue like Lake Dobbiaco or Lake Landro lying at 1406 metres a.s.l., a cycle track of about 30 kilometres leads down from Dobbiaco in Upper Pusteria to Cortina d’Ampezzo, in the province of Belluno. The cycle trail is also known as “The Long Road of the Dolomites”.

Itinerary:
The trip on two wheels to Cortina starts right in front of the Hotel Laurin in Dobbiaco. Sitting comfortably on the saddle and pedalling without haste, we leave the town centre behind us and head towards Lake Dobbiaco, skirting Lake Landro until we reach Carbonin, a district of the municipality of Dobbiaco in Val Pusteria. Here, those who want can take a first break. The Dobbiaco-Cortina cycle trail runs along the disused railway line to the Cimabanche Pass, at an altitude of 1530 metres, until it reaches Cortina. The cycle trip for the whole family ends here, in this town of almost 6000 inhabitants in the Veneto region.

Length: approx. 30 km
Time: 2,5 - 3 h
Altitude difference: 300 m
Difficulty: easy

From the source of the Drava in Dobbiaco, the Drava cycle trail follows the river of the same name through the Austrian tourist areas of Eastern Tyrol and Carinthia as far as Maribor (Slovenia). The first stage of this international cycle track, about 366 km long, takes cyclists of all ages from Dobbiaco in Upper Pusteria to Lienz.

Itinerary:
The cycle trip for the whole family starts right in front of the Hotel Laurin in Dobbiaco, although the official point of departure of the cycle trail is the nearby station at Dobbiaco, to the west of the source of the Drava. From Dobbiaco we pedal to the neighbouring town of San Candido with its district of Prato alla Drava. Following the well marked Drava cycle trail we continue through Tassenbach, Strassen, Abfaltersbach, Mittewald and Assling, until we finally reach the first houses of Lienz. The well structured Drava cycle trail is particularly suitable for families with children as the part from Dobbiaco to Lienz is all downhill, making the trip much easier for even the youngest riders. The return trip can be by bike or, more conveniently, by train.

Length: approx. 45 km
Time: 2,5 h
Altitude difference: 500 m
Difficulty: easy
